The Barbershop Harmony Society provides a rainbow of programs for young men to experience the joys of singing, in general, using barbershop harmony as the epitome of masculine vocal art. There are local, regional, district and international programs to satisfy the needs and desires of young men in middle/junior/senior high school or college and anyone under 30. These include school programs by the local chapters, regional festivals, camps and clinics, district high school quartet contests, and International Collegiate Barbershop Quartet contest, Youth Chorus contest, and Harmony University modules geared to youth, like the Next Generation Chorus track. Programs include: Barbershop Coaching We are making free music and coaching available to any group that wants to form a quartet or ensemble. We will come to a school during or after school, or to a parent's house and provide craft sessions on your schedule. Contact the Youth In Harmony Coordinator . We are offering summer programs for all schools. You can also join us at rehearsals on Tuesday evenings at 7 PM - no obligation to join. Get YOUR act together! Real Men Sing Clinic and Show We have scheduled a Real Men Sing Workshop and Show for November 6, 2010. This will be a local version of the Young Men's Harmony Festival described below. There will be a flyer announcing the Workshop. Music will be made available to you when your application is received. Youth Chorus
Interested singers, see our Youth Chorus page for info about music and rehearsals. Check the guidelines for the Youth Chorus Festival. We will be forming a San Diego County Youth Barbershop Chorus in the fall to compete at the Mid-winter Convention in Las Vegas, NV, on January 29, 2011. Stay tuned for sign-up information. MOH Festival The 10th Annual SCVA-sponsored Young Men's Harmony Festival , put on by the Masters of Harmony, will be held at Costa Mesa College in Orange County on February 19, 2011. This event attracts over 250 high school students each year. Submit applications by November ??, 2010, to get a $5 discount. If you need transportation, contact Kent Richardson. High School Quartet Contest There will be a High School Quartet Contest at the Far Western District Spring Convention in San Jose, CA, on March 19, 2011. This convention also features the best adult quartets in the southwestern states, competing to represent the district and themselves in the International Quartet contest. Transportation, registration and lodging will be provided for contestants. Let us know if you want to go. These guys did it. And Timbre-Rings, from Westview High School in Rancho Penasquitos, won it in 2009. Real Men Sing Concert This event will be held at 6:30 PM on April 16, 2011, at Lewis Middle School. It will be open to ANY all-male vocal ensemble of ANY genre. This event will demonstrate the diversity of musical programs in our schools. Our headliner quartet (TBD) will top the bill, which will include guest ensembles, such as a cappella groups from local colleges and high school quartets currently in training, as well as a featured Barbershop Harmony Society quartet. This will serve to have the young audience members and their parents see the potential for singing in school as an enjoyable experience, as well as a hobby that can serve them throughout their lives. Details. College Quartet Contest There is an International College Quartet Contest (ICQC) each summer with qualification rounds in the spring. Watch the Musical Island Boys who won in 2006 and visited San Diego in January 2007. The Ringmasters from Sweden won in 2008 and visited San Diego from January 21 to 24, 2009. The Vagrants from the LA area won in 2009. Other college quartets have links on the Champions site. The next contest is in Kansas City in July, 2011, at the Barbershop Harmony Society International Convention.
